Procedure Text

Definition:

      Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.

      Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules.

      Texts that deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how to succeed

Purpose:

      To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps.

      To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something

Generic structure:

      Goal : (e.g : How to make spaghetti.

      Material or Ingredient : (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc. )

      Step : (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the onions becomes slice. . .)

Language Feature:

      Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)

      Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )

      Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.

      Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook

      Using Simple Present Tense


Example:

HOW TO MAKE A CUP Of COFFEE


MATERIALS AND INGEDIENTS :

      2 spoons of sugar

      one spoon of coffee powder

      hot water

      a cup

      a spoon

 

PROCEDURE :

      Prepare two spoons of sugar, a cup, hot water, one spoon of coffee powder, a spoon.

      Put one spoon of coffee powder into the cup.

      Pour some hot water into the cup.

      Add 2 spoons of sugar into a cup of coffee

      Stir it well and the hot coffee is ready to drink



TASK

Read the following text to answer questions number 1 to 3.

How to Clean an LCD Screen

  •  Shake up the detergent and put it 15 – 20 cm away from the LCD screen.
  • Spray on the LCD screen surface sirectly.
  • Cleanse gently using the fabric cleanser or brush
  • You can also do the following steps:
  •  Spray the detergent on the fabric cleanser.
  • Clean the LCD screen surface to make it as bright as a new one.

How to Clean a Refrigator

  • Remove all frozen foods and ice cube trays. If you have a seconf refrigator, use it to temporary store these items. If not, put the food in a cardboard box and cover with newspaperr. Dump the ice cubes.
  • Remove all other food stuff and place on your kitchen counter or in cardboard boxes.
  • Either turn the temperature control “defrost” or unplug the electricity to the refrigator (or both).
  • Never scrape or jab at the ice with a sharp instrument. You may cause serious damage to the freesing unit. Allow it to melt. Either put a flat pan under the freezer to catch the drips or put a large towel in the bottom of the refrigator
